As expected from this innovative
organisation, WSA’s SUP Symposium has
been of huge value in recent years for recreational paddlers and coaches alike...to gain knowledge or test out sides of the sport they may not have yet experienced.

I’ve found the industry day particularly important as an opportunity to connect and network and also to hear from new thinkers in this fast growing sport.

I’m really looking forward
to 2022!
— Simon Hutchinson - SUPfm podcast

As SUP and Surf continue to grow worldwide, opportunities present themselves in new venues, disciples the ages of our users and our commitment to key principals.

We are proud to bring together a varied group of speakers, to educate, inspire and entertain. This year’s schedule of keynote speakers:

08.30 – 09.00: Arrival & Registration

09.15 – 09:30: Opening

09:30 – 10.30:

Tim Morton (Adventure RMS) - Five Key Safety Messages From One Thousand Safety Management Reviews

Adventure RMS are the inspectors for the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA)  and the Ministry of Defence (DSR). Whilst every club, centre and school are different, there are areas of safety management which consistently challenge even the most diligent and well meaning. This session will share the ‘top five’ safety messages from over a 1,000 safety management reviews completed in the last 2 years.

10:30 – 10:45: Break

10:45 – 11:45:

Jason Anker MBE (Anchor & Marsh) – ‘It’s Not About the Fall it’s About the Bounce’

Jason Anker MBE has long been regarded as the UK leading inspirational safety speaker. He still provides his famous ‘5 seconds’ talk but has also added a new talk ‘It’s Not About the Fall it’s About the Bounce’.

This talk covers Jason’s mental health crisis following his fall and subsequent recovery.

Jason has now been speaking for over a decade but he is now sharing things he has never spoken about before. A unique story that covers Health, Safety & Wellbeing and looks at how they can influence one another either positively or negatively.

The Fall, Jason openly talks about his workplace accident and the effect this had on himself, family, friends and work colleagues but he now also explores and discusses why he made that decision on the day of his accident and how his own health and wellbeing in the months that led up to his accident also played a big part in that safety decision.

The Bounce, This part of the talk covers Jason's recovery from his mental health crisis. He talks about how some simple changes he made in his day-to-day life has had a positive impact on his wellbeing and then he discovered the resilience to start thriving in all aspects of his life, after just coping with anxiety, stress and mental health issues for nearly a quarter of a century. He also covers how companies need to create the culture, where people feel valued and part of the TEAM and are given the opportunity to thrive.

11:45 – 14:00: Lunch & Networking

14.00 – 15.00:

Julian Penney (PHAROS) - Communicating Through A Critical Incident & The Implications And Impact Of Social Media

Our speaker from Pharos Response will highlight some of the key issues around complex stakeholder communications, and how social media can both help and hinder organisation response. Included within the session will be some 'top tips and bear traps' when communicating via social media following a critical incident.

15:00 – 15:30:

Jason Taylor (Tirio) – Judgement and Decision Making for Adventure Sports Leaders and Guides - a Behavioural Approach.

Adventure sports leaders and guides must make sound judgements and effective decisions to ensure they can manage the significant risks present in an operating environment that is hyper-dynamic and has high levels of environmental complexity. High-level stakeholders in adventure sports such as HSE, Insurers and Awarding Organisations, require that leaders demonstrate competency to fulfil their responsibility to look after their clients. Most adventure sports qualifications identify the importance of decision making, however, by using competence-oriented syllabi they may not provide effective methods to develop a prospective adventure sport leader’s decision making. In this presentation we shall discuss decision making in adventure sports, the factors impacting on it. We shall also propose a need for a more behaviour-oriented approach to decision making and explore tools and models to develop decision making skills in aspirant leaders and guides.

15:30 – 16:30:

SUP it and Sea – From Amateurs to Adventurers: Lessons from a First Expedition

Dave and Sophie knew each other for 2 weeks and each had less than a year’s SUP experience when they committed to paddling the length of the UK. They only had a month to prepare – learning Tidal navigation, planning a route, onboarding a support crew, locating two hardboards (an almost impossible task in post COVID 2021), training and actually learning how to paddle on the sea! What ensued was an adventure of a lifetime with its fair few challenges. The expedition started out as an ‘in’ joke; a play on “Suck it and See” that would become a philosophy that saw them become the only two people in the world to consecutively SUP, then Hike and Cycle LEJOG and in under a year. Because….. why not?!

16:30 – 17:00: Close
