WSA Foundation Surf Instructor

Do you have a passion to teach surfing? Our surf instructor courses will give you the skills and knowledge to teach a variety of different clients using industry developed techniques formulated by experts in this field.

For this qualification to be valid you must hold a valid lifesaving qualification such as the SLSGB Surf Lifeguard or SLSGB Surf Coach Safety and Rescue award. Other  lifesaving qualifications are recognised by WSA please contact us to check. WSA offers a combined course offering both the lifesaving and foundation surf instructor course so you can get both qualifications with us.

  • Foundation Surf Instructor £280
  • Duration – 2 days Training & 1 day Assessment

Gaining our foundation surf instructor qualification will  enable you to instruct beginners through to intermediate level. We will equip you with the coaching skills to confidently enter the work place as you will be learning from industry experts in this field. Minimum age  to attend the course is 16. We require all of our candidates to be able to CONFIDENTLY demonstrate that they can perform the manoeuvres listed below in surf which is head high.

  • Trimming
  • Top turn
  • Bottom turn
  • Cutback
  • Re-entry

All manoeuvres must be performed forehand and backhand. If you are not sure whether you are at the required skill level to attend our course then send us some video footage of you surfing and we will advise you further.

WSA Advanced Surf Coach

  • Advanced Surf Coach £TBC
  • Duration – 2 days Training & 1 day Assessment

This new course covers the key areas of advanced input surf coaching. It seeks to establish necessary Bio-mechanic understanding as related to surfing performance as well as laying down Correct Technique rules for the key manoeuvres. This is all set out from an individual surfer centred approach. Practical skills such as video analysis are looked at as are Detection / Correction and the skill set route pathway. The course is open to all surf instructors already holding a Level 1 with any of the main providers. There is also a basic surfing skill level requirement that needs to be met. The course looks to add to any surf instructors skills set and employability. It will give them some tools to be able to better take on the role of an actual coach – be it with junior surf club or private individual work.

Courses will be run by Joel Gray who brings vast amount of experience and practical skills to the WSA team. Joel has a strong background in teaching and education that started as a Secondary School Geography Teacher in Newcastle upon Tyne. Introduced to surfing as a young lad in the North Sea he’s remained a passionate and active surfer for over 25 years, twice becoming National Champion. Joel’s coaching work has also lead him to being National head coach for Junior Teams 3 times.

Minimum age  to attend the course is 16. Candidates must also hold the WSA Foundation Surf Instructor qualification or recognised equivalent. We require all of our candidates to be able to CONFIDENTLY demonstrate that they can perform the criteria listed below in surf which is head high or greater and experience in surfing different types of surf break i.e. Beach, Reef, Point is beneficial.

  • Variety of Innovative and progressive manoeuvres
  • Combination of major manoeuvres honed at Foundation level
  • Surf with speed, power and flow
  • Manoeuvres should be performed in the critical section of the wave
