WSA is proud to have partnered with brokers Jelf to provide comprehensive worldwide insurance to our membership of instructors, coaches and trainers.
With nearly 30 years experience, Jelf is an insurance broker offering a personal, direct service from a dedicated and experienced team whose sole purpose is delivering exceptional service to both meet and exceed the needs and requirements of WSA members.
We chose Jelf because they make the task of getting professional insurance to WSA instructors, coaches and trainers simple, uncomplicated and cost-effective. Furthermore, Jelf believe they have the in house expertise in sports insurance with team members that include surfing and SUP enthusiasts whom naturally understand members’ needs. Furthermore, Jelf are recognised as experts in sports insurance and have an insurance team that includes several surfing and SUP enthusiasts whom naturally understand our members’ needs. Jelf’s parent company is Marsh, the worlds’ largest insurance broker, which boasts a 145 year history and has 60,000 employees across 130 countries
WSA instructors, coaches and trainers insurances is available to UK and Northern Ireland residents and is valid worldwide (excluding USA & Canada) WSA coaches can practice and teach across the various WSA disciplines as long as a a qualification is held in each activity.
Key facts of cover provided by the WSA instructors, coaches and trainers insurance policy include:
- Public Liability to £10 million
- Employers Liability to £10 million
- Professional Indemnity to £10 million
- Products Liability to £10 million
- Directors & Officers (Trustees Indemnity) to £5 million
- Personal Accident (accidental bodily injury or illness) cover up to £5,000
- Work at home, at a client’s home, or at any owned, rented or hired premises anywhere in the world other than the USA & Canada
- Damage to third party premises
- Libel & Slander
- Breach of confidentiality, negligence or breach of duty of care

WSA Accredited Schools
At WSA we believe our schools deliver the best current practice with the best equipment giving new to experienced paddlers and surfers the very best experiences. We ensure that our schools and their coaches are kept up to date with not only current best practice and knowledge we also believe in schools sharing experiences and helping each other. Creating a common theme of developing together and helping each other to provide a consistent message is something we believe in strongly. We know that our family of schools deliver great coaching sessions and experiences, however we DO NOT insist that schools only employ WSA coaches. We understand and recognise that other coaching qualifications can be relevant and that working under a WSA coach or to WSA standards quality can be met. We also know that the benefits through CPD, insurance and a common approach promote the WSA coaching scheme.
We listen to our coaches and schools and try our best to meet the needs of the industry. We visit schools annually carrying out an inspection which is a two way experience. The WSA has commitment to ensuring high quality across all aspects of the school and work with school owners and employees to achieve this. As a WSA Accredited School you will feel part of our larger family, be included in developments and help shape the way forward. You will be personally supported through a positive and developmental inspection and we will be on hand to answer any technical questions you may have.
WSA hold an annual coaching symposium and during this event our schools will come together to discuss developments and improvements. We include relevant information, a series of workshops and industry professionals for you to work with and develop your schools. Leading equipment distributors will also be in attendance for you to test the latest products and answer any questions you may have. Worldwide we work closely with statutory bodies and agencies. We are in a unique position to have positive relationships with these bodies and are continually engaged with them in regards to our activities, enhancing the sports and leading on coach development and safety. Accredited schools get discounted membership for staff with 1 FREE membership for every 5 taken.
COST £200 pa
WSA recognise other relevant coaching qualifications and as a result offer a transfer process for those wanting to join the WSA and continue through our coaching pathway. Other benefits include Personal and professional liability insurance, continual development and of course, being up to date with the WSA family.
To do this you will need to hold and send copies of
- A current First Aid Certificate
- A recognised coaching qualification in SUP or Surf from the BCU, BSUPA, ASI or ISA (foreign qualifications can still apply). These courses must have been completed within 3 years
- Membership £60
