It’s been a long time in the making, but we’re thrilled to announce that Water Skills Academy (WSA) has joined forces with global movement ‘1% for the Planet’; joining more than 2000 businesses worldwide that are dedicating 1% of sales to non-profit environmental organisations.
For those of you who might not have heard of the movement, 1% for the Planet was born when two businessmen with a love of the outdoors realised their responsibility to protect our planet. Together, they committed to dedicating 1% of sales to the environment – whether or not they were profitable.
What began as a great idea became a renowned global network that now funds a vast range of environmental organisations so that, collectively, they can become a more powerful force in tackling global problems.
Our commitment to the seas and waterways
As a water skills business, it goes without saying that water lies at the very heart of everything we do. Our vast oceans are home not only to our passion, but to an incredible array of wildlife and providing us with the very air we breathe.
But sadly, these oceans and waterways are under threat.
Through our 1% for the Planet membership, we have committed to partnerships with the brilliant Surfers Against Sewage and Save Our Rivers to take our share of responsibility for the health of our planet.
The pledge in practice
Living, working and playing on the water means that we see the devastating impact of human activity on our most precious resource every day.
In the current climate – environmentally, politically and economically speaking – we believe passionately that businesses can play a key role in addressing the challenges we face. Logically, as our business grows, our commitment to the environment should grow with it – and organisations that matter most to us should enjoy more support than ever.
That’s why we are proud to have formalised our commitment to our oceans and our planet, and hope that our membership of 1% for the Planet will help to protect our vital natural resources and encourage others to do their bit for a cleaner, healthier planet.
Kate Williams, CEO of 1% for the Planet, said: “Our member companies have donated more than $175 million to our environmental non-profit partners to date. Currently, only 3% of total philanthropy goes to the environment and, only 3% of that comes from businesses. The planet needs bigger support than this, and our growing network of member businesses is doing its valuable part to increase giving and support on the ground outcomes. Our members lead with purpose and commitment, characteristics that consumers support. We’re excited to welcome WSA to our global network”.
Surfers Against Sewage
We’re delighted to be able to help SAS’s outstanding work through our 1% for the Planet membership.
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) is a grassroots movement founded in the 1990s by surfers, swimmers and open-water enthusiasts seeking to tackle chronic sewage that was damaging our oceans and our health. The campaign grew and the UK now enjoys some of the cleanest beaches in Europe as a result.
Alongside emerging threats to water quality and wildlife, SAS has evolved into a leading marine conservation charity, coordinating beach cleans, campaigning locally and nationally and leading the plastic-free movement, aiming to change consumer behaviour and industry standards to stop plastic entering the ocean in the first place.
Save Our Rivers
Our last free flowing rivers and wild places are increasingly under threat from dwindling legal protections and damaging developments.
Save Our Rivers believes everyone should have a say on the future of our wild rivers and National Parks, empowering them to use existing legal structures to fight back, respond to government consultations and lodge planning objections.
The body activates communities to see the value of free-flowing rivers and has the expertise to help scrutinise planning processes, environmental impact assessments, wildlife habitat studies and riverine flow studies.
With the media spotlight on carbon neutrality, Save Our Rivers emphasises that equal focus on preserving biodiversity, at-risk habitats and natural processes is essential to the survival of humankind.
Again, Save our Rivers was a natural choice of partner to support through our 1% for the Planet membership.
Change is coming
We couldn’t be prouder to have signed up to 1% for the Planet.
From now on, 1% of every purchase, every course booking and every membership enrolment will be channelled to these hugely important environmental causes.
We’re incredibly grateful to our loyal customer base and hope you agree that we can do so much more together than we can alone.
So, join us and jump in – the water’s lovely!
